REQUIREMENTS AND PRACTICAL INFORMATION FOR PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS

Am I qualified to be a teacher?
a)In order to be English teacher, you should have completed at least college - level or university education.
b)All teachers have to successfully complete the preparatory Certificate in TEFL (CELTA)1 or its equivalent. This is an intensive one-month course. It is possible to apply without this certificate and complete the requirement in Poland before you start the job.
c)Good communication skills are an absolute necessity.

Spiritual Commitment
We need born again, evangelical Christians with a missionary spirit, living close to God and with a strong desire to share Christ. You must have love and concern for people and experience in people-oriented ministry. You will need to be able to adapt to a new culture and cooperate in an international team.

What if I'm not Baptist?
Baptist membership is not required, but teachers should be committed to a local church.

How long are we talking about?
We encourage teachers to commit themselves to two years service, so that they will have time to adapt as well as to focus on ministry. However, most teachers choose to stay longer.

Do I need to speak Polish?
You don't need to speak Polish to teach English. If you want to learn some basics to feel more at ease in the country, we will help you find a teacher.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

As you come to serve the people of Poland, the school will try to serve you the best it can in helping you with the details of daily living. Here are some preliminary points of interest.

Bureaucracy:
There will be some paperwork to complete before you come, most of which is done by the school. EU citizens do not need a visa or work permit.

Housing:
The school finds housing for teachers. A flat for a single person or couple costs a minimum of 220 pounds ($400) per month. You can choose to share a flat with another teacher or an English speaking student.

Living Expenses (food, local transport, etc):
These will amount to approximately 180 pounds ($330) per month. Teachers also have other expenses such as telephone bills, clothing, pension contribution in Britain, etc. Teachers have national medical insurance here and it is possible to obtain extra medical care at private doctors for about 10 pounds ($19) per visit.

The public transportation system in Wroclaw is excellent, so no other form of transportation is really necessary.

Salaries
The school is a non-profit ministry of the First Baptist Church. The school covers its operational expenses and shares in the costs of maintaining the school/church building. In order to reduce the number of teaching hours for teachers 12-16 hours a week (enabling time for ministry among students), the school asks teachers to raise some or all of their support before coming to the school.

Full Sponsorship
Some teachers are sent by mission organisations (denominational and interdenominational) and are fully sponsored. This is a great help to the school's budget. Full sponsorship would be a minimum of 340-400 pounds ($650-750) per month, excluding international fares and holidays.

Partial Sponsorship
Some teachers are partly sponsored by their home church or a missionary society. The school pays them a salary (in Polish zloty) to make up the difference between the level of support and actual monthly expenditure.

No Sponsorship
The school also hires a teacher with no sponsorship. The salary provides a basic standard of living under Polish conditions (including housing) but is not generous enough to provide for international flights.
It is possible to take an extra class in order to cover some extra expenses. We can also help you with finding a part-time job in another school or hours of private tutoring.

Access to the city:
Wroclaw is a city of about 700,000 people with lots of interesting cultural events. The city also has an airport (WRO) for domestic and international flights and good rail and bus connections. There are cheap flights (Ryannair, Wizzair, etc.) available to several British cities. See the city's English-version web site for more information (www.wroclaw.pl/ms/english).

Holidays are paid. Generally there is a Christmas break of approximately two weeks, a two-week break in February and a couple of days at Easter. There is usually a six-week summer holiday and a two-week summer camp for students that teachers are expected to be involved in.

Teaching positions start in September and applications are accepted throughout the year. Short-term positions are also available at our summer camps.

Our Goal - Proclaiming Jesus using English

Ministry and English go together.

1.Through high-quality teaching, we gain the respect of our students.

2.By creating an atmosphere of respect and care, we gain the acceptance of our students.

3.Because of our witness, we can share the Gospel and reach out in a wide variety of ways.

How do we do it?

You've got to be a committed teacher.

1.Be properly qualified.

2.Attend ongoing teacher training.

3.Creatively use a variety of teaching materials and methods to meet the needs of your students.

4.Thoroughly prepare for your classes.

5.Regularly assess your students' learning progress.

We have to create a caring and respectful atmosphere.

1.Everyone working at the school needs to treat each other with respect.

2.Show the love of Christ to your fellow teachers, the staff workers that support you and, most importantly, to the students who sit in your classroom twice a week.
Genuine concern communicates more than clear grammar presentations.

3.Pray for each other.

We share the gospel and reach out:

1.By presenting the Christian message in various extra-curricular events at the School, for example, talks on Christian topics followed by discussions, video shows, seasonal programmes such as a Christmas carol evening, weekend trips, English Bible Studies, evangelistic summer camps for the students, etc. (See the school's web site for highlights from previous camps.)

2.Through friendship evangelism. By becoming friends with your students and showing genuine interest in them and their lives, you will build a good foundation for a deeper relationship. Friendships in Poland take time. As relationships develop, friendship evangelism comes naturally and its ultimate goal is to help students enter into a personal relationship with God through Jesus.

We will help new converts in their spiritual growth and also, if possible, in their integration with a local church (Baptist or another evangelical church or fellowship).
